If this Yahoo deal goes through (and it looks likely), you’d better start looking for a new home. I know a lot about these types of acquisitions. It won’t end well. It will take a few years for Tumblr to decline into oblivion, but decline it will.
“High school, it seems, has changed. It has become competitive. Young men and women — 13 to 18 years old — must work more or less tirelessly to ensure their spot at a college deemed worthy to them and their families. So rather than living their adolescent lives — lives brimming with desires and vitality, with vim, vigor, and brewing lust — these kids are working at old age homes, cramming for tests, popping Adderall just to make the literal and proverbial grade. And for what? So they can go to a school that puts them in debt for the rest of their lives. School has become a great vehicle of capitalism: it quashes the revolution implicit in adolescence while simultaneously fomenting perpetual indebtedness.”—Daniel Coffeen (via setbabiesonfire)

“I think Silicon Valley as we know it may be coming to an end,” Sacks posts, arguing that because major Internet companies are on the prowl for innovative ideas, it’s too risky and costly for entrepreneurs to attempt to create successful new companies. “How many [viable] ideas like that are left?”
This is certainly concerning. As you probably know, startup ideas are a limited natural resource, and despite recent advancements in extraction techniques there’s increasing concern that we’re approaching, if not already past, “peak idea.” I hear there’s talk in Congress of tapping the Strategic Idea Reserve.
I’m still against offshore drilling for it, though. It’ll be too disruptive to the migratory patterns of venture capitalists following the yacht trails to Cabo San Lucas.
